Introduction

A week long hiking trip to Skye

This trip will take in some great walks into spectacular corries, up onto the Cuillin ridge to take in one of the Munro's. This week is about exploring the islands history, and geology, while enjoying some great walking.

Our initial meeting point and first nights accommodation will Roybridge on the Friday. The rest of our accommodation will be based at various guest houses on Skye.

Day 1 (Saturday)

Depart Roybridge 10am for drive to Broadford on Skye, via Mallaig to Skye Ferry. This allows us to take in some great coastal scenery, before crossing to Skye. Broadford will be our first overnight stop on Skye.

Day 2 (Sunday)Our first walk in Skye will take in a coastal walk of around 10Kmtrs. showing the remains of two villages, before the 'Highland Clearances' of the 1800s

The scenery and geology as we walk along the coastal path is spectacular. Day 3 (Monday)Coire Lagan

This is a spectacular walk up into the Coire Lagan, which takes us right into the heart of the Cuillin Mountains. We walk with the sea behind us, climbing gradually with the Cuillin mountains facing us.

Cuillin Ridge

We start today's walk from the Sligachan hotel, directly below the ridge. We walk from here gradually climbing up the Fionn Choire to ascend on to the ridge, and onto one of its Munro's, Bruach na Frithe. This will give us spectacular views of the complete Cuillin ridge opening up before you.

Day 4 (Wednesday)

The Quirang

We drive up the east side of the island heading for the 'Quirang'. We pass the 'Old Man of Stoer' and visit Kilt rock, before our walk starts at this amazing geological rock feature, the Quirang. We return to our accommodation via a visit to Flora MacDonald's grave. She being famous for helping 'Bonnie Prince Charlie' escape from Scotland following his defeat at Culloden.

We will then visit Flora McDonalds grave and the Highland Life museum before returning to Portree.

Day 5 (Thursday)

Today's walk again combines this time a high coastal walk (350mtr. ascent) through the long gone crofting community of Lorgill. The crofters were cleared during the 'Highland Clearances' of the 1800. The Lorgill crofters were read the following statement by a sheriff officer. ' To all the crofters in Lorgill. Take notice that you are hereby duly warned that you all be ready to leave Lorgill at Twelve O'Clock on the 4th. of August next with all your baggage but no stock and proceed to Loch Snizort, where you will board the ship Midlothian that will take you to Nova Scotia, where you are to receive a free grant of land from Her Majesty's government. Take further notice that any crofter disobeying this order will be immediately arrested and taken to prison. All persons over seventy years of age and who have no relatives to look after them will be taken care of in the County Poorhouse. This order is final and no appeal to the government will be considered. God save the Queen.

Day 6 (Friday) We return to Roybridge via a stop at Eilan Donan castle. An extra nights accommodation can be arranged at Roybridge for an additional cost, or there is a six o'clock train to Glasgow, with onward connection to Edinburgh.
